# Transforming Indonesia’s Maritime Future: The Fisheries Vessel Modernization Program
The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has launched an ambitious strategic initiative designed to revitalize the nation’s capture fisheries sector. By implementing the Fisheries Vessel Modernization Program, the government aims to significantly boost the productivity of local fishers while ensuring sustainable growth within the maritime industry.
## Program Scope and Technical Specifications
Between 2026 and 2028, the government will oversee the phased construction of 1,582 modern fishing vessels. These ships are engineered to meet diverse operational needs, ranging from coastal waters to deeper offshore environments.
The fleet composition includes:
* 1,000 vessels at 30 Gross Tonnage (GT)
* 557 vessels at 200 GT
* 25 vessels at 500 GT
To maximize efficiency, these ships will be equipped with specialized gear, including Pelagic Purse Seines, Gill Nets, Handlines, Bottom Longlines, Tuna Longlines, and Pole Lines. Each vessel design is tailored to the specific ecological characteristics of the designated fishing zones and the technical requirements of local operators.
## Employment Opportunities and Human Capital
Beyond infrastructure, this modernization drive serves as a primary engine for job creation and socio-economic empowerment for coastal communities. The project will generate a demand for 20,094 skilled crew members, divided into two primary categories:
* 8,676 Officers: Including Captains (Nakhoda), Chief Engineers, Fishing Masters, Mates, and Assistant Engineers.
